HSK & AU Test

HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) is a standardized Chinese language proficiency test designed for non-native Chinese speakers. Previously, the HSK exam was divided into 6 levels, with Level 1 being the easiest and Level 6 the most advanced. However, the system has now been expanded to 9 levels, categorized into Beginner Levels (1–3), Intermediate Levels (4–6), and Advanced Levels (7–9), in order to better support a wider range of academic, professional, and practical language applications.

Details of the Original HSK Exam System (6 Levels)

  • Levels 1–2 (Beginner): Focus on basic vocabulary and simple daily-life sentences.
  • Levels 3–4 (Intermediate): Enable learners to communicate in daily life, academic settings, and workplaces, including conversations with native speakers.
  • Levels 5–6 (Advanced): Emphasize more complex communication skills and a broader range of vocabulary usage.

Transition to the New HSK System (9 Levels)

  • Beginner Levels (1–3): Designed for learners who are starting to understand basic vocabulary and simple sentence structures.
  • Intermediate Levels (4–6): Intended for learners with practical communication skills for everyday, academic, and workplace use.
  • Advanced Levels (7–9): Designed for those who wish to use Chinese at an advanced level in academic studies and professional environments.。

Benefits of Taking the HSK Exam

  • Education: Used as a requirement for university admissions or for placement according to language proficiency levels.
  • Employment: Used in recruitment, staff training, and promotion considerations in workplaces.
  • Language Proficiency Assessment: Serves as a tool for learners to evaluate their actual Chinese language proficiency level.

At present, the Confucius Institute at Assumption University serves as an official examination center and places great importance on organizing the Chinese Proficiency Test HSK under the original 6-level system, as well as the HSKK speaking proficiency examination.
